Robert Patterson is a computer graphics visualization artist / designer at NCSA’s Advanced Visualization Lab (AVL) at the University of Illinois. He collaborates with scientists, technologists and other artists to produce cinematic visualizations of scientific data. Patterson has art directed and created virtual camera choreography for visualizations that have appeared in IMAX 3D, feature film, broadcast television and fulldome planetarium productions. Patterson co-created Virtual Director, a virtual reality tool for interactively designing camera moves. He uses Virtual Director and other technologies to collaboratively design immersive journeys through scientific data to inspire audiences about astrophysics, earth systems and other scientific domains.
